The Yangtze River Delta International R&D Park in Suzhou provides offices for research and development. A conference center was also created with a cafeteria and hotel as well as an exhibition hall with additional meeting areas. The building cubatures are designed and built in five groups that vary slightly in shape and facade development. Different-sized rental spaces are created that make it possible to offer large buildings with approximately 1,900 square meters per floor as well as smaller buildings with only 700 square meters. The conference building and its cafeteria are open to all users as a meeting point or for taking breaks. The exhibition building invites communication and interaction. The distinctive and subtly varying facades provide passive sun shading, thanks to deep reveals and their differing orientations. The planning complies with “sponge city” requirements: This means that pond and green surfaces on the site percolate or evaporate rainwater as a way of contributing to the microclimate. In this respect, the idea for the design came from the “Humble Administrator’s Garden,” which is well-known in Suzhou and beyond. This modern interpretation meets the requirements for a sponge city and provides a recreational area at the center of the ensemble.
