This artistic project is developed in a small town on the Japanese island of Inujima, in the Seto Inland Sea. The area is characterized by its privileged natural environment, and it is here that a series of pavilions, exhibition spaces and landscaping installations are scattered on the rural fabric. The project’s aim is to create a general atmosphere that transforms the town into a museum, so that the architecture and art displayed blend with the houses, the landscape, the sky and the sea.
Each pavilion addresses its specific location, generally chosen following landscaping criteria such as altitude and views over the sea, their immediate context and the routines of small town life. These factors define the form, size and materiality of each intervention. Many of them are refurbishment and transformation projects on existing traditional wood buildings, and others are new structures that contrast with their surroundings; but all the pavilions are maintained within the scale of the existing houses, preserving the rural character of the area. The materials used go from wood and granite (locally sourced), to contemporary ones like aluminum and acrylics.
