At the end of the Müllerpier, near the Lloydkwartier and the Euromast, a sturdy and open family house was built – in the framework of the self-build project Create @ Müllerpier – on a beautiful location on the Maas with an unobstructed view over the water.

Based on a few regulations prepared by supervisor KCAP, which included a garage for 2 cars as a condition, a split-level house was designed that focuses on the Maas and the quay as possible.  Facing the front garden, the garden room is connected to the kitchen, the living room and the studio via wide, white tribune steps. The studio is in turn adjacent to a green roof garden (in the making). Both from the dining table in the kitchen, the couch in the living room and the work table in the studio, there is a spectacular view on the passing ships.

Beyond the studio space a massive steel stair spans the house in the transverse direction and the house becomes more private: the bed- and bathrooms are placed here. The fall-out protection is secured on one side by stainless steel cables along the stairs that bridge the height from the studio to the top floor, where one can access to the deepened green roof garden with plenty of view, but where wind has no free play. Due to the open design of the steel staircase, the split level that continues here and the transparent fall-through protection, there are endless lines of sight in the upper part of the house. In the private rooms too, a view of the Maas was a focus point. The bedrooms at the front of the house have large windows on the Maas and while bathing one can see cruise ships pass by. Even from the childrens rooms and the bathroom at the rear of the house, the water remains visible … albeit that co-operation must be granted by another family member to open a room door.

The large windows in the house offer a great view, but also let in a lot of light. However, due to the chimney effect of the void with the open steel staircase, the heat can easily escape and the house doesn’t heat up in summer. The green roof gardens that will soon be installed on the roof terraces make the indoor climate even more pleasant and provide a water buffering system on the roof. The materials used in the house are pure: the base is white and the concrete is left in sight. The stairs are either white or solid, clear lacquered steel. All wet areas are tiled with different colors of Bisazza tiles, but because these spaces are (usually) behind closed, white doors, it never gets too much. Cabinets are tailor-made for the house and executed in Polish Pine or colored MDF.
