CAIUS(开聿)是一间由资深时装媒体人创办的时尚产业顾问公司。办公室选址在黄浦区的一处老洋房内。这样的外部环境必定带有些上海弄堂的市井气息，但办公室的内部空间，设计师则希望呈现出完全不同的风格，除了最基本的现代、简练和舒适，还要体现一种粗野的优雅。
CAIUS is a fashion business consulting firm founded by former media fashion professionals. The office is situated in Huangpu District, Shanghai in a lane house with unique Long Tang atmosphere. In contrast to the traditional building façade, the designers have created a contemporary interior space, applying modern gestures that are minimalist and transitional, along with the finishing touch of raw elegance.

改造的第一步是内部空间结构的重新设计。设计师将所有原始的房屋内部隔墙拆除，用两根工字钢来支撑二楼露台楼板悬空的一角，让整个空间的开阔度做到最大化。循环利用的工字钢，因时间而产生的锈蚀表面，呈现出独特的质感。
The first step to the transformation was structural redesign. After tearing down all the partitions, the designer reinforced the structural foundation with two I-beams, extending to the corner of the second-floor terrace, in order to maximise the capacity of the space. Due to the recycled nature of the I-beams, it comes pre-weathered to exude a unique patina.

整个空间分为南北两个区域，南面为办公区。阳光从露台边的玻璃屋顶的照进来，充斥着整个房间。我们将通往露台的旧楼梯拆除，用混凝土浇筑出新的富有雕塑感的旋转楼梯，成为整个空间的视觉核心。具有体积感的楼梯踏步，搭配块面状并间隔出现的扶手，既保障了视觉的通透与采光，又让工整有序的空间节奏变得不会刻板与拘谨。
The space is divided into a northern and a southern section with the workspace located in the south. Sunlight filters through the glass roof top filling the entire room. Tearing down the original staircase to the rooftop, the designers substituted the old structure with a sculpted concrete spiral staircase that has become the focal point of the whole space. The blocky staircase with staggered vertical railings ensures light transparency, while maintaining the rhythm and fluidity of the space.

北面为休息/会客区。位于这个区域的洗手间，不能获得任何来自房屋外部的采光，于是设计师为这个仅仅3平米的洗手间开了两个落地窗。南面的落地窗窄而长，像是一道在墙壁上切开的口子。阳光从楼梯顶部的玻璃墙大把地洒进来，穿过楼梯，挤进这个狭窄的窗口。窗口旁边的石墙，将这个小小空间再次进行分隔，使得窗口的存在不会对使用的隐私性造成影响。
The relaxation/meeting area is placed In the northern section. Within just 3sqm dedicated to the restroom the designers installed two full height windows to compensate for the absence of natural light. The window on the south side is slender as if a sharp incision has been opened on the wall, allowing daylight to generously travel through the glass rooftop. The marble wall situated right next to the slender window divides the space, once again, to ensure absolute privacy.

洗手间的隔墙、洗手台和置物层板，都使用了一款米黄色的大理石。这些大理石在矿区最初开采时，会形成自然的断裂面，然后运到世界各地的石材工厂，每一块材料都有着各自独特的形态。設計師将石材的这种天然形态保留，应用在空间的各个角落。厚重的石板表面上粗糙，却隐藏着大自然的质朴、细腻与坚实，让空间有了生气与力量。
Inside the restroom, the designer used a beige marble material to create the partition, sink, and shelving. Marble forms natural fractures when they were quarried from the ground, thus each piece has its own characteristics. Such originality is preserved by the designers in the design strategy to infiltrates the space, from partition walls to door sign. The natural display of these marble slabs is heavy and rough, but the simplicity, delicacy, and strength hidden within have infused the space with vitality and elevated energy from mother nature.

设计师将新、旧、天然材料的结合，与简约的空间环境碰撞出了全新的视觉氛围；对光线的控制，营造出了多层次的光影效果；对整体空间功能性的重新规划与整合，让空间的使用度变得更加自由。方寸之间，别有洞天。从熙熙攘攘的街道拐到这历经岁月的老屋前，推开门，是焕然一新的景象。
A completely new atmosphere has been created by blending the old and new natural materials within a simple spatial condition. The designers played with orientations and openings to create kinetic architecture with daylight. Spatial configurations are carefully re-considered to achieve a more flexible space. An unexpected encounter with the peaceful historical house is awaited within the bustle and hustle street.
