Design of Chadstone was started by our visit to Castlemaine, a small neighbouring town of an hour drive from Chadstone Shopping Center. Castlemaine is one of the actively operating quarry towns near Melbourne, supplying basalt stone products like basalt slab, gravel, tiles for construction around Victoria.
During the excavation of commercial stone products, often, pieces of big boulders are being dislodged as the by-product of the process and left forgotten in the ground. Time and the natural environment slowly weathers these abandoned pieces, and each becomes unique in colour, textures and pattern. We are attracted to the beauty and the story behind these boulders, and hence keen to make the boulders as the heart of the design.

商店立面的两侧堆起了大量的玄武岩，创造出强烈的视觉冲击，能够吸引到路人的注意，并引导他们进入店内。一旦进入店内，顾客即能欣赏到内敛的室内装饰材料和配色，就像步入一个美丽的雕刻般的洞穴中一样。设计师希望为顾客提供一个安静休闲的环境，让他们能在店内自如的探索Aesop的产品。
We have created stacks of basalt off-cut boulders piled on the two edges of the shop façade, creating a strong visual interest that will capture the attention of curious passers-by and encourage them to delve deeper into the store. Once inside, customers will discover an array of restrained materials and colour palette, which resembles the sense of being in a beautifully carved cave – offering a calm retreat for customers to explore Aesop’s products in the store tranquilly.

店内采用了一系列材料以搭配门口风化的巨石： 风化的玄武岩巨石被堆积在店门的两边； 展开的软钢网形成透明的隔断，构建出入口具有动态感的视觉效果； 从入口进入内部空间的天花板也采用软钢网； 店内的水槽，零售架和座椅都采用混凝土浇筑； 悬挂的展示架采用薄钢板； 地板采用混凝土抹平，与店内的装置相呼应。 店内的还采用了了柯布西耶在1952年设计的波恩贝灯。
An array of material compliment to the weathered boulders are composed within the store. Weathered basalt boulders stacked in the shop façade; Mild Steel Expanded Mesh, forming a transparent façade screen, giving a dynamic view into the store interior; Mild Steel Expanded Mesh, forming ceiling expanding from entry into the interior; Form-casted concrete forming consistent materiality for all the joinery islands including sinks, the point of sales, and seating bench; Mild steel plate forming floating shelf for product display; Concrete screeding forming flooring to resonate the joinery materiality; Featured Lamp on the point of sales – Le Corbusier’s Borne Beton Lamp, originally designed by the architect in 1952.
