Fruit bowls have come in a variety of sizes and shapes, some catering to aesthetic appeal, others focusing on function and the preservation of fruit. Yet I have never found a perfect balance of the two. Not to say I have achieved perfection with the Gravity Bowl, I do think I have achieved an elegant balance of beauty and function.

该设计的灵感来自一种可视化模型,它解释了万有引力对行星围绕恒星运动的影响。当人们看到装着水果的碗时,它仿佛漂浮在桌面上的彩色不规则形体,突显了引力感。

The inspiration for the bowl came from watching visual models of gravity used to explain the effects of the force of gravity on planets orbiting a star. Gravity as an inspiration is also highlighted when the bowl is viewed with contents, appearing as an amorphous coloured form floating above your table surface.

引力碗由合成纤维网和透明玻璃制成,实现了美学价值和水果存放的结合。它们去除了装饰和不必要的元素,使用合成纤维网承托水果,受力均匀,最大程度降低了水果损坏的可能,减缓了水果腐烂的速度。纤维网由透明的环状玻璃支撑,彩色水果篮的形状清晰可见。将它们摆在桌上或柜子上,碗的形状随着水果的不同而不断变化。纤维网还可以透气,防止与香蕉一起储存的其他水果因香蕉释放的乙烯而过早成熟、加速变质。

The marriage of aesthetic values and fruit preservation come together in the use of synthetic mesh and clear glass. Void of decoration or unneeded elements, the gravity bowl utilizes a synthetic mesh to cradle fruit with even pressure, minimizing the possibility of bruising and subsequent accelerated rotting time. The mesh is supported by a clear glass ring, allowing the coloured form created by the cradling of fruit to be seen through the body of the bowl. The Changing contents of the fruit bowl equate to an ever-changing bowl on your table or counter. The use of mesh also allows for ventilation, preventing premature ripening of fruit stored alongside bananas, as bananas off-gas Ethene known for increasing the deterioration process in other fruit.

透明玻璃不仅让使用者可以看到纤维网的形状,还使碗在视觉上体积最小,只突显出纤维网部分。选择这些材料是因为它们具有多功能性和美学特性。其中,尼龙网具有良好的延展性和弹性。玻璃用于碗体,因为它透明度高,而且无毒,对环境影响小,可以回收再利用。用玻璃取代树脂玻璃或塑料,提高了质感,加强了使用者对材料的认知,在他们之间建立了更紧密的联系,降低了水果碗被扔到垃圾填埋场的可能性。

The Clear glass does not only allow the user to view the mesh form but also gives the Gravity bowl a minimal visual footprint, highlighting only the mesh portion. The materials used were chosen for their multifaceted functional and aesthetic properties. Nylon mesh was used for its self healing edge properties, and elasticity.  Glass was used for the body of the bowl for its rich transparent qualities and lack of toxic effect on the environment if ever broken and discarded, as well as its endless recyclability. Glass instead of plexiglass or plastic also increases the level of perceived value creating a stronger bond between user and product, resulting in decreased likelihood of the Gravity Bowl ever seeing a landfill.
