Wesley College’s Music School provides a central and dedicated facility for the St Kilda Road Campus to celebrate its creative arts education programme, bringing together the departments of music, performing arts and digital arts, while also a presenting a centrally located Middle School Hub that closely connects with existing built and landscaped elements. Each department has varying requirements that dictate their location within the building and are expressed externally through different façade articulations. The size and type of internal spaces generates a rhythm across the exterior, working to complement the striking representation of the school’s crest that has been ‘carved’ into the facade of the building.

The three departments within the new building are arranged vertically by level. Performing arts on ground, music on levels 1 and 2, and digital arts on the top floor. Each department has different programmatic requirements, dictating its location vertically within the building. The departments are expressed externally through different façade articulation creating a stratified composition. The sizes and types of internal spaces generate a rhythm across the façades alluding to the different activities within. The primary signage element to the building will be a subtle texture relief constructed into the facade of the building, being the school crest emblem.

Offering exceptional facilities – with individual spaces for band rehearsals and recitals, as well as tuition studios, multi-purpose classrooms and recording studios, the design of the building offers a network of spaces outside of formal classroom settings for collaboration and allied activities that stimulate interaction and the exchange of information. The building incorporates a purpose-built auditorium and stage with associated backstage, side stage, and fly tower as well as a dance studio and drama theatrette, new staff administration areas, recital spaces, a band room and additional flexible spaces suitable for teaching and rehearsal.

各层楼板在同一位置上开有不同形状的洞口,从而在竖向上创造出一个虚空间。这个虚空间不仅将各层空间联系在了一起,更最大限度地改善了室内的自然光环境。这个虚空间就被称为声室。声室的中心位置上设置着一个大楼梯,在必要的时候可以配合着地面层作为一个引人入胜的活动场地。它作为一个虚空间,将学院楼内的所有空间在竖直方向上联系在了一起,营造出一种完整的体量感。声室采用玻璃外立面,不仅在空间和视觉上将学院楼向外部环境打开,更创造出一个全新的、通透的中心活动空间。
The common spaces across each level are connected by materiality, voids and a continuity of form to create the feel of a single volume. The volume morphs as it rises through the levels, to bring in natural light and access the facilities of each floor. This interconnected volume is referred to as the sound chamber. At the heart of the sound chamber is a grand stair – an engaging and flexible events platform. Where the sound chamber volume engages with the façade, it is celebrated, physically opening up the school and engendering a new heart and clarity for the departments and their workings.

At the core of the Music & Performing Arts Centre is the ground floor internal courtyard. The new Hub to the Middle School is the most public of spaces, a thoroughfare between the newly enclosed Hattam Quadrangle and the greening rear turf sports Oval. With the new centralised cafeteria adjacent, the court offers a refuge from the external environment and place for interaction during lunch. Outside of this time the courtyard and interlinking grand staircase or events platform becomes a space for collaboration, breakout spaces where students can detach or interact in large or small groups, even as individuals. Students are free to inhabit the space and utilise it to suit their needs. Adjacent to the courtyard is a DDA stretcher lift servicing all floors and a main circulation staircase naturally lit with views across the Hattam Quad.

Performance Art now has its own distinct entry with two key large spaces including a purpose built dance studio and black box theatrette. These are connected to the underside of the Adamson Hall where refurbished changing areas and a smaller drama studio complement the performance arts programme. Secondary vertical access stairs link Performance Art with the BOH (back of house) areas to the stage areas of Adamson Hall. A loading zone also nestles under the upper floor volume on Moubray Street, providing a secure drop off zone for goods and materials to the upper floor workshop areas. Drama storage and a Music road store also front this loading zone allowing a BOH secure access area with direct and easy access when required.

Welcome to Wesley Music. As staff, students and visitors arrive via the grand staircase, the resonating sound chamber and impromptu auditoria become an obvious component linking the three-level atrium. The entry of the music school is large and spacious connecting key public spaces including the main performance spaces in the Recital Hall and the Band Room. The reception overlooks the first floor void for passive supervision while also providing the front to the staff music office behind. A secondary entry to the Adamson Hall stage area opens to the level 1 foyer providing flat floor connection at stage level while also becoming a backstage area to the Adamson Theatre Company when in production mode outside of school hours. When the events platform is occupied, circulation between levels is achieved through the adjacent main staircase allowing movement around the collaborative sound chamber. At this level the building also connects into the existing building at level 1 to the refurbished Library foyer.

Level 2 is visually connected to both the ground and level 1 floors through the void penetration. Although connected, this part of the building is separated through its use and is primarily a teaching zone with a mixture of individual tuition studio spaces and larger ensemble and rehearsal spaces which are also used as general classroom spaces. There is little public exposure to this floor; as such the area is perceived as a student occupied area where-by the student takes ownership and responsibility of the space. To encourage this, music locker spaces are placed as feature joinery pieces around the primary circulation. These will incorporate locker facilities as well as seated areas and bench space. This area moves away from the traditional corridor space flanked by lockers and encourages interaction within a larger informal space. To maximise natural light to the upper floors a larger double height glazed penetration marks the east facade. The expression on the facade represents the escape of noise from the sound chamber out to the external environment.

数字艺术系位于四层,它将视觉传播艺术、多媒体和媒体研究等专业结合在了一起,为不同年级的学生提供了一个集中式的教学空间。尽管就目前来看,无论是从空间上还是从内容上来讲,数字艺术系都还是一个独立的存在,但随着数字媒体和技术的不断发展,它势必会成为戏剧和音乐的补充。可以说,音乐与数字视觉艺术之间的关系正在不断地增强。从宏观上来看,数字艺术可以在声室内通过数字化的展示与音乐和表演艺术产生互动;在微观尺度上,各楼层的公共空间都可以作为数字艺术这种学科交叉性主题活动的场所。四层的中央设有一个大型的公共区域。这个公共区域内设有一系列细木工桌椅,为学生们提供了一个课外的小组研讨空间。此外,这里还设有所有学生皆可使用的电脑,从而促进了学科交叉性活动的进行。实际上,各楼层在空间设置上的目标都是鼓励学生之间的交流与互动。同时为了增强学校空间的安全性,设计团队还设置了一个可以监督所有公共空间的员工办公区,以便在需要的时候限制外来人员的访问。
The Digital Arts educational programme brings together Visual Communications, Multi- media and media studies. The subjects provide a collective space for varying year levels including VCE students which suits the programme of being located anonymously on level 3. Although independent, Digital Arts is seen as complementary to the existing arts of Drama/student theatre and Music with the ever expanding evolution of digital media and technology. The connection between music and the digital visual arts is constantly expanding. On a macro scale the interaction between Digital Art and Music/Performance Art can occur within the sound chamber through digital displays while on a micro scale the collaboration between the varying subject which make up digital art will occur across the single floor plate in the ‘in-between’ spaces outside of the classroom. A large communal area central to the floor with joinery desks and benching will allow and encourage further work development of independent and group study outside of time tabled classes. The exploration of fixed general access computers to allow classes to be time tabled within this space, similar to a university model is being explored. The purpose of this is to encourage a cross over of intellectual property between the subjects as opposed to subjects being run independently. Consistent on all levels is the intention to provide a space where students have the opportunity to collaborate with fellow classmates outside of traditional lesson times. As added security, a centralised staff office space is located centrally to the floor with passive supervision across the collective informal breakout zones. The intention is for the floor to be independently locked down when required at the two circulation stair cores.
