周庄酒厂位于周庄镇建新村，建于20世纪80年代，在酒厂存在的这三十余年里，为村里人提供了很多工作岗位，在那个年代一度是村里人的骄傲。随着酒厂的衰败，建新村也逐步空心化，年轻人纷纷到周庄或者城市里寻找就业机会。

Zhouzhuang winery, located in Zhouzhuang Jianxin Village, was built in 1980s. In the past 30 years, the winery has provided many jobs for villagers. At that time, it was the pride of the villagers. However, with the decline of the winery, Jianxin Village has gradually become empty, and young people have come to Zhouzhuang or other cities to find job opportunities.

酒厂原有建筑是一系列典型的长形厂房空间。在设计中并没有对厂房本身做过多的改变，放弃对“形”的塑造，转而为每个既有的建筑营造恰当的周边环境，从而改变建筑。如果说园林中的建筑类型是靠与周边环境的关系定义的，那么不去改变建筑本身，而去改变周边环境，就一定能改变建筑。在改造中添加的元素之于整个项目相当于作文里的虚词，起到的是转折、连接、递进的作用，它们自身并无特别实在的含意，它们的意义只有在实词之间的关系中凸显。与其说是改造了建筑，不如说是构筑了花园。
The original building of winery was a series of long factory building space. Our design doesn’t change much of the factory itself. Instead of shaping the buildings, we change the buildings by creating the suitable surroundings for each existing building. In traditional Chinese garden, building types are defined by the relationship with the surrounding environment. By changing the environment, building can be changed without changing the building itself. Elements added in the reconstruction are just like virtual words in the composition, which play the role of transition, connection and progression. They have no special meaning in themselves. Their meanings are showed only in the relationship between notional words. Rather than transforming the building, it is better to build a garden.

酒厂在半岛上，两侧临水，故意不去设置可以看到“正立面”的视角，即使有可能看到正立面的地方也不设置让人停留的空间，让人漫游过后对作为“物体”的建筑观看的印象几乎没有，得到的只是置身其中的居游感。从厂房的尺度，转为人的尺度；从生产的尺度，转为居游的尺度。酒厂的出口与入口距离很近，在处理上入口小尺度的围廊与庭院让人忽略厂房尺度而顺利转入厂房内部，小广场上与人同高的酒坛遮挡住视线。待到参观完整个酒厂，从出口处绕过酒坛方才发觉是进来时的地方，时间的不尽带来了空间上的深远。
The winery is on a peninsula, with water on both sides. We deliberately do not set the angle of view where you can see the “vertical facade”. Even if it is possible to see the façade, there is no space for people to stay. The impression of the building as an “object” is almost nothing, and the only thing people get is the sense of traveling. The design transform from the scale of the factory to the scale of the people, and from the scale of production to the scale of traveling. The winery’s exit is very close to the entrance. Small-scale entrance halls and courtyards make visitors neglect the scale of the factory and easily get into inside, while wine jars at the same height of people block their view. After visiting the entire winery and bypassing the wine cellar from the exit, people will realize that it is the place where they come in. The inexhaustible time brings about a profound space.

改造更新后的周庄酒厂保留了黄酒生产的部分，新增了展览、体验及餐饮等功能，成为新的万三酒庄，为周边的年轻人提供了新的工作机会。我们很真切的看到了建新村和附近村子的年轻人来到酒厂工作，在父辈们工作过的地方继续着自己的生活和事业，延续着酒厂和村子的记忆与活力。期待更新后的酒厂能够链接起酒厂的过去与未来，为建新村带来新的荣光。
The renovation of Zhouzhuang Winery retains the part of the rice wine production, and it adds new functions such as exhibition, experience and dining. It becomes the new Wansan winery, providing new jobs for the surrounding young people. We really saw the young people from Jianxin Village and nearby villages coming to the winery to continue their life and career in the places where their parents had worked in, continuing the memory and vitality of this winery and this village. We expect that the updated winery will be able to link the past and future of the winery and bring new glory to Jianxin Village.
